Viper Island was named after the vessel in which Lt. Archibald Blair came to the islands in 1789. It is also rumored to be home to Viper snakes. This island was the location of the initial jail, before the Cellular Jail was built and also became the execution site for prisoners, namely, Sher Ali who assassinated Lord Mayo in 1873.
